The Great Korean Road Trip – Day 5 – Mountain Fortresses

Three Year Mountain Fortress

Distance Traveled Today: 210km

Distance Traveled Total: 840km

Woke up in Cheongju this morning to explore a part of the country I am mildly familiar with. The central part of Korea is
known for its mountainous terrain, its beautiful national parks, and probably a third thing. The main goal for today was to see the mountain fortresses of Korea, a site in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative list.

Unfortunately, a lot of the coordinates on the UNESCO website were incorrect, making this a bit of a wild goose chase for 3 of the 5 I tried to read. Of the two I managed to reach, _________ was the nicest. It has a huge park looking up to it which would be perfect for a picnic.

The main gate of Sangdang Sanseong

The second one was nice, but I REALLY recommend you bring some bug spray. I have never had that many mosquitoes rain down on me at the same time and I’ve been to Florida! In any case, ____ is a most unusual fortress. Its architecture differs most likely due to the much earlier era when it was constructed.

Sanneyon Sanseong literally means “Three year Fortress” because of how long it took to build.

See ya!
